I tend to avoid studying in my spare time – I do so much of it during the day! Instead I see my friends, read a lot, draw, do photography, do archery, swim… It’s good to have an escape from being a scientist to allow your brain to rest and refresh!
I do quite a lot of sport in my spare time and like trying out new ones – I started doing rowing last year which is really fun. I also like acting in plays, going to the cinema, and cooking nice meals (trying to anyway..) I try to get all my work done during the day so I can do fun things in the evenings and unwind a bit 🙂
It’s great doing a PhD (the next step after a degree), because it’s at University so you are still kind-of a student. There are loads of clubs to join, and it’s really easy to make new friends and have a busy social life!
Like Sarah and Jessica I also try to not bring work home with me.
However, I am currently trying to learn Dutch in my spare time but this is very recent and not going very well.
In my spare time I will normally read a book, do sports, hang out with friends and try not to think or do any science. Like Sarah said we all need to give our brains a rest!
As the others, I am trying not to study in my spare time and I enjoy doing sports or seeing friends. It is a good practice to balance science with other activities, although sometimes, work may follow me home, especially when I have scientific papers to write or presentations to prepare 🙂
