Yes I believe in evolution BUT I also believe in God. I don’t think it has to be one or the other. The way I see it is that science has been able to show how the universe was created and how we got to the point we’re at today and why things happen. But I believe that God could still be behind it all. The stories in the Bible (like the world being created in 7 days) are obviously not in line with science. But at the time they were written down, people knew very little of science – if someone had told them about the Big Bang, the growth of the universe, gravity, evolution etc they would just not believe it!
So I believe in both. But I also think it’s important to respect other peoples’ beliefs and not force your opinion on others. 🙂
Being a scientist, people often ask you “how can you believe in God and be a scientist at the same time?” But I really think the two can go together, and there are a lot of famous Christian scientists who also believe in Evolution and natural selection!
No test has ever been done that can tell the difference between a universe created by God, and one that appeared without Him. But science doesn’t go by absolute proof – otherwise science textbooks would be empty. It’s all based on finding explanations to things that happen or have happened using theories, and doing tests on these theories – and evolution has definitely passed thousands of these tests!
I guess it comes down to what you believe in on a personal level. Sarah’s right – it’s definitely true that back in the days when the Bible was written, people knew so much less about science than we do now – so maybe some of the creation story in the Bible can’t be taken totally literally.
I guess this is a pretty hot topic you’ve brought up here 🙂 and different people will have very different views and beliefs!
