Structural biology of proteins from Staphylococcus aureus

Me and my work

I use X-rays to discover cool structures and design new medicines

My Typical Day

I fire protein crystals with X-rays to visualise molecules in 3D and spend a lot of time at the computer analysing them

What I'd do with the money

I would donate the sum to the BHZ Connection Language project in Brazil which benefits children’s education.

The money will be useful to provide books and other teaching materials for the project.

What is the most fun thing you've done?

I swam with turtles and tropical fish in Barbados

What did you want to be after you left school?

A lecturer

Were you ever in trouble in at school?

Yes, I would be late for lessons after gym class and basketball!

What was your favourite subject at school?

Chemistry

What's the best thing you've done as a scientist?

To have solved the atomic structure of proteins and to have discovered their mechanism of action

What or who inspired you to become a scientist?

The excitement of the grand ‘possibility’ and to hopefully benefit society through my research

If you weren't a scientist, what would you be?

A medical doctor or a chef!

If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!

To be more organised, to win the Nobel Prize and to have my own group in the next 3 years.
